Last year, as our Christmas card design, we created an homage to everyone's favorite holiday film, "A Christmas Story," using virtual knit stitches. (Hey, we only had a week. Otherwise I would have gone all out and done it for real.)

It went over super well, and I thought, hey, why not go all out and have it available to be done for real??

So, I give you, the "A Christmas Story" knitting chart!

This is for a gauge of 5 stitches over 1" but really, you can use whatever yarn you like. It's 60 stitches across, and can be dropped into any holiday sweater, stocking, or blanket pattern you can come across. It's sort of repeatable. I'm definitely making this a reality by next Christmas.

Duck press at Le Picher, the best place in Seattle.

We had a little adventure over the weekened. We decided to bite the bullet and make our first trip to Seattle, which is not a bad drive at all. It's taken us almost 3 years to make the trip to see more of the city than the airport! Crazy. So, we booked a discount room at a crazy hotel and drove down after classes on Friday.

Saturday was a great day. It began with a trip to Le Picher for wonderful French food and atmosphere, then off to exploring Pike's Market, where we bought lots of old used books and saw a fish being thrown, which is the thing to do. We went to the original Starbucks, which was suspiciously exactly like going to any other Starbucks, only with a billion people crushed into the space and nowhere to sit down. I was glad to leave it. We ate at an amazing restaurant with one of D's oldest friends, and then because a good thing twice is great, back to Le Picher for a lovely nightcap.

Now, the duck press up there sits proudly on Le Picher's counter, with an engraving that says it was presented to some great chef. They're rare to see, and I only know what it is because of Julia Child's memoirs. For those of you not in the know, a plucked and ready duck is taken and the breast and legs are removed and cooked partially. Then, everything else is crammed into this device, bones and all, and crushed mightily, while all the good stuff (blood, juices, marrow) runs out of the little spigot at the bottom. Then, you cook the parts of the duck you did not obliterate in the delicious duck juice and serve it up. I am told it is the height of elegance.

And now I know how that duck feels, I think. Unfortunately, all plans of Pioneer Square and clearance boots at REI for Sunday were squandered, when I woke up at 6 am sick as a dog. Somehow I picked up a super nasty stomach flu and spent the rest of the day in a semi-coherent miserable state all the way back home. It was AWFUL. I still haven't recovered completely. I forgot how terrible the flu can be! I'm almost back on my feet. Maybe not as sturdy as those feet up there, but I'll take it.Guinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02430156012295579401noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8210320613287096281.post-60747301720752722722013-01-02T13:52:00.000-08:002013-01-02T13:53:13.475-08:002012 + 1

Another year is here.

We stayed home for the holidays, opting to catch up on work and play instead of traveling. The shot above is from Grouse Mountain, where we took our new snowshoes out for a spin. I like a sport that has a very low learning curve and ends with beers. We made it back to the lodge as the sun set and the views were worth the cold and exertion.

It's been a long vacation, and now we are going back to school next week. Next week! I can't believe it. I'm ready to get back into the rhythm of regular life. With no other obligations, we've been going to bed at ridiculous hours and getting up at even more ridiculous times. At one point we were nearly nocturnal. I'm ready to see more of the sun.

Guinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02430156012295579401noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8210320613287096281.post-59003253913842360632012-12-26T23:42:00.001-08:002012-12-26T23:43:30.665-08:00Merry Winter WishesThe semester has come to a close, the presents have all been opened up, and now we're in the post-holiday coma that comes after all of that! We're very tired. Sleeping at normal hours has been wrecked totally. The house is still kind of a disaster. But that's okay! Still a week and a half of vacation, thank goodness.

We've done a holiday card for the past few years, but this year totally ran out of time to do it before the, um, actual holidays. So, we made it a winter card instead. Behold!

We approached it differently this year; still as a collaboration. Durwin was inspired by the Illustration Friday things that I've been doing, especially the time limit aspect (I try to limit them to under 2 hours, or two episodes of "Buffy: The Vampire Slayer") so, the basic cardinal shape was created, then we both took one, put on some episodes of This American Life, and then went to town. They sort of reflect us; his is the very classy, pared down timeless design, and I'm the funky chicken showing off all her colours.

It works for us!

I wanted to try something different, a new technique I'm working on. I want to try to combine some hand-drawn elements with the vector work. We just did a great illustration that combined that, but I can't show anyone just yet.

This week's theme was "Whiskers" so of course I want to draw a very bearded man. And, his cats, of course.

This week's theme is "Water." I liked the possibility of this subject. It can mean so many things! And what better theme to tackle when it's started pouring buckets. Which it certainly has.

I thought about making a rain-based theme but honestly, I'm seeing enough of that outside my window.

This week's drawings brought to you by Season 4 of Buffy. Poor freshman Buffy. College is hard!
More lovely patterns. Also trying out the digital shadow thing. It's not as satisfying as the real thing, but good enough for a Two Episode illustration!Guinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02430156012295579401noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8210320613287096281.post-64662753860793460702012-10-11T14:24:00.001-07:002012-10-11T14:24:23.528-07:00Illustration Friday: MirrorWeek 2 and I'm still going strong.

This week, I broke my rule a little and spent some time over the week on the patterns. I love making these patterns. I find it soothing. Just finding minutes in between other projects to have a little fun.

The subject this week is "Mirror." I've been talking a lot about complementary colors in my class this week, so that is where my mind went right away. I like playing with complementary neutrals as well, it adds a lot to a composition. It's really just an excuse to explore color.

I think the left side is more successful than the right, but that's okay with me. I like that little girl's patterns, I think she'll show up more.Guinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02430156012295579401noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8210320613287096281.post-13610378288030574262012-10-04T14:14:00.002-07:002012-10-04T14:15:56.619-07:00Illustration Friday: BookMy days off are now on Thursdays, which is a fabulous time to do a little Illustration Friday.

I'm giving myself just a couple of hours, or a couple of episodes of Buffy (I'm deep in season 3; God, Westley, but do you suck!) to complete these. Just a way to take a break from the throes of freelance and putting together lectures to have a little fun.

This week's theme was "Book" which was so much fun. I've been reading and talking, and talking and reading quite a lot this semester. Most of it is academic in nature, but some is more fun than that. I wanted to do an illustration based on talking about books. Book club, if you will. And the tweedy nature of the patterns is a nod to the particular nature of my literary conversations as of late (which, I want to get back to readin' those funnybooks STAT).

Without a super awkward sunburn. (Not pictured: sunburned inside elbows, forehead, most of my left thigh)

I went on a super long bike ride yesterday and must have forgotten to put sunscreen on my hands, so they burned. My fingers were out of the sun, so they stayed lily-white. Last year I sunburned my legs badly in LA, but you could clearly see where I had wiped my sun-screened hands on my thighs. It was awesome.

I didn't regret the bike ride, though. It was glorious.Guinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02430156012295579401noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8210320613287096281.post-86283590791733651562012-07-30T14:49:00.001-07:002012-07-30T15:10:43.784-07:00Ravellenics and Pro-BonoWell, I definitely forgot how to log in to this blog, it's been so long! How terrible.

Relaxing in the summertime, makes me want to get back into the blogging. I know I'm not terribly good at it. If I were my own student, I'd kick my butt for having such a lousy web presence. So, let's remedy this a bit, shall we?

I've been watching the Olympics like crazy, but not on NBC. No cable means no watching it online. To tell you the truth, I am not the biggest fan of their coverage anyway. Last night during the women's synchronized diving, the focus was squarely on Team USA, and while they did very well taking home the silver (yay!), they did not even show the winning team's (China) reaction to winning and hardly mentioned it at all. It was disappointing, especially to the spirit of the games. So, I've been watching a stream from the UK and it's much more awesome.

Speaking of Olympics, Ravelry is holding the "Ravellenic Games" once again and they asked me to create the icon for the games and for the commemorative pin, so I did!

I'm very happy with how it turned out. You can get yourself a pin if you are inclined, and the proceeds go to the Special Olympics, so you should darn well be inclined! Pre-order yours here.

I wanted to take a minute to talk about pro-bono work. I drill it into my students' heads that they should not work for free. If you depend on client work for your livelihood, or at least a part of it, it doesn't do you any favors to create work for free or for an unethically small amount of money. It devalues their work and puts all of us illustrators in a bad spot. That said, I am all for pro-bono work, i.e. work for a good cause, for something you believe in or want to give your time to. For me, doing this for Ravelry is just that. (If you aren't familiar with Ravelry, it's an amazing online community and resource for fiber arts, mainly knitting.) I am a big-time knitter and I love their site; I probably use it at least a few times a week. I love the community, I love the premise, and I love this event that coincide with the Olympics, in which knitters challenge themselves to finishing a project during the games.
In 2008, I volunteered to create a badge icon for the first Ravelympics (now called the Ravellenics). It went over very well, and the owners of Ravelry asked if they could turn it into an enamel pin to sell in their shop with proceeds going towards the Special Olympics. I agreed, and it raised a little money for me and a company I love, and a lot of money for a great charity. I volunteered during 2010 and the same thing happened, only better. This time around? There are over 10,000 participants, which just blows my mind. It's awesome!
This is a conversation that took place tonight:

"Honey, what's that word you said today?"

"You mean 'Fauvism'?"

"Exactly."
I love out of all the hundreds of words he said today, he knew exactly which one I was searching for.
It will not DIE. I'm really grateful that my schedule is the way that it is right now. Monday I was feeling bad, but went to teach anyway and ended up having a great class, but then came home and died. I spent all of Tuesday and Wednesday in bed, venturing only outside once for more cold medicine. (Seriously, I think cold meds are much, MUCH stronger here than they are in the US.) My throat's been so sore that all I can eat is jello and soup, and I've drank so much hot gingery honey water that I slosh a bit when I move. I finally feel half-way human today but still get tired very easily. This morning as I was lecturing I kept thinking how comfortable that padded model stand looked...if only I could lay down on it...

The weather isn't helping much either, all grey and drizzly. Just want to sleep for a whole week. I haven't done anything productive outside of teaching all week and I feel like a lump. I wanted to do this past week's IF but it's already Friday. I'm definitely going to get a jump start on the next one. This week's theme is "dusty" and I think I have a great idea for it. We'll see if I can finish!Guinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02430156012295579401noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8210320613287096281.post-55189500725728134542011-01-11T13:40:00.000-08:002011-01-11T13:40:48.139-08:00Save your wristsI found this great video via the comic tools blog. I have been working more than usual and the mouse is taking a toll on my hand. I find knitting breaks help, because it's a different sort of repetitive motion, but this video takes you through some great stretches to prevent tendinitis and other repetitive stress injuries to your hands. Good for anyone who sits at a computer, draws all day or knits.
I'm setting a timer for myself to get up and stretch every hour. I had been feeling a lot of pain in my wrist and forearm and these made it feel much better. It stretches muscles I didn't even know I had! :)Guinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02430156012295579401noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8210320613287096281.post-80272959148559345342011-01-08T00:12:00.000-08:002011-01-08T00:15:06.264-08:00Illustration Friday: Resolution

Last week's theme was "resolutions," so I wanted to originally illustrate all of my New Year's resolutions that I made last week. And then a perfect storm of work fell into my lap, and there was no time for that. (In fact, I didn't even get this one done in time to put the link up. Yikes!) So, I went with the first one, "Learn to make a killer Beef Bourguignon."

Which I hope to do soon. Because it would be delicious!

I'm playing with very limited color palettes right now. I like this very warm yellow and brown, it seems yummy and cheery, which I like on these dreary days. And it doesn't take very long, which is great for these little exercises, because I want to keep this up!Guinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02430156012295579401noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8210320613287096281.post-19409938666618622722011-01-04T13:05:00.000-08:002011-01-04T13:05:41.935-08:00New ObsessionNew Year's was great. We went out to eat with a friend of ours and then went to an unexpected party at another professor's house, which was a nice surprise. This break has been pretty quiet, it's almost over and we haven't really done a whole lot. We had all these grandiose plans to travel to Portland or at least Seattle, but it didn't really happen, which I am okay with. We may go to the mountains one day this week, but if we don't make it, I won't be heartbroken. We are getting a lot of work done, which is definitely a good way to start off the new year.

I've got a new obsession. It started last night, when I got thoroughly sick of the miles of stockinette stitch on my Cloudy Sunday, which I am thinking about ripping out and starting over anyway, so I found some terribly knitted Noro scarves in the closet and rescued the yarn for a better purpose. I think I made them right after I started learning to knit, and so they really weren't done well and weren't worn very much at all. Noro is too damn expensive and gorgeous to have such a fate.

I was looking for ideas and found some examples of beautiful log cabin blankets, so I immediately cast on for a square. And I could not stop knitting it at ALL, not til many episodes of 30 Rock later. (This may not be great for my new-found productivity. Eh, who needs sleep?) It's so addictive. I have 5 skeins of Noro right now and I think I need about 12 more to complete it, but I'm going to buy them just a couple at a time until this is finished. It's going to be gorgeous and so very warm.
My first foray into Illustration Friday. I meant to do this a lot sooner! This week's theme was "winter." I love to knit and so it felt natural to include some fair-isle patterns in the background. Nothing keeps you warmer. I'm loving red and green together right now, this kind of olive and cherry red is so pleasing to me. I love that pop of color against the neutral, it's just what I need on the dreary northwestern winter days.

This is actually a holiday postcard created for this year, but it fits right in with the theme. Next week will be a brand-new illustration, though. No cheating! Although I did just create this a few weeks ago so it's not really cheating so much.

Finish the Couch Potato to 5k program (even just once). I tried last year and it didn't work so well. Going to try again.

Achieve permanent residency in Canada. This I'm working on now.

Grow my freelance practice to include another steady client. Send out promotions, make us known in the area.

Get into a new market with illustration: papercraft, pattern work, fabric design, packaging, etc.

Get the design business site up and update Perpetual Flights with new work.

Make a quilt. Even if it's just a lap quilt. Been meaning to do this for a long while.

Go hiking in the mountains, snowshoe, ski, snowboard, some kind of outdoors activity that I haven't tried yet. We live in this gorgeous place, we need to take advantage of it!

Find a yoga studio that I like and can go to on a semi-regular basis.

Accept more invitations to go places. In a nutshell, say "yes" more to more things. I'm too much of a homebody. I can't complain that I can't meet people if I never leave the house!

Blog more! Ye gods, I'm terrible at it.

Participate in Illustration Friday. To keep sharp, try new techniques, etc. If not every week than every month at least.

In that vein, FINISH Beautiful Scars. Make millions, buy a boat, etc. (That may not be feasible, but hey.)

Write a letter to one friend every month. A real letter, on paper, and mailed. 12 letters, 12 friends, 12 chances to reconnect and say "hi."

Be the best partner I can be.

I think it's a good start. We'll see if I can stick with it! Tonight is Peking Duck with some new friends, renewing my SIN card, attacking the ever-present pile of laundry, and even a little drawing stuck in there for good measure.Guinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02430156012295579401noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8210320613287096281.post-47077770476578511762010-12-25T16:11:00.000-08:002010-12-25T16:11:11.446-08:00Merry MerryThis was an excellent holiday.

This is the first time I haven't spent the holidays with my giant family, and it was just me and the Dude, here in Vancouver. A little odd and a little sad but it's shaping up to be a good day.

There is a channel on the TV that is nothing but a fireplace. It's the best thing on today. I guarantee it. That and Barenaked Ladies holiday music, kropsu, funny hats from the crackers, movies and not getting dressed ever.

My adorable husband got me an original Lorraine Fox painting, and a copy of "Water Babies" illustrated by Jessie Wilcox Smith with his vows written inside. I got him a few DVD and an art book. And a children's book that I read at the wedding. I think he won Christmas. See my pretty painting?
I looooooove it. It's absolutely gorgeous and totally unexpected. Can't wait to frame and hang it. Yep. He does pretty good. Tonight is fondue and more movies. We went to mass last night and managed to find the church that is at least 75% Filipino completely by accident. Dude was transported back to his childhood. It was nice, even though we came late and ended up standing in the hall the whole time along with the other 50 latecomers. It doesn't matter though.

Have a very merry Christmas, internet.Guinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02430156012295579401noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8210320613287096281.post-61549385291596694092010-11-12T15:54:00.000-08:002010-11-12T15:54:50.614-08:00A new placeSo, seeing as how I am starting a new chapter (living it, really) in my life, I have started a new blog, to document it. I want to hold myself a little more responsible for documentation and maybe I can share more work with the world. Good things!
